The country of Argentina is divided into 23 provinces the same way that a US state is divided into counties. Of the 23 provinces in Argentina, there are 7 main ones associated with quality wine production. Argentina also makes distinctions of its wine growing regions in the form of 4 areas, North (or North West), Cuyo, Patagonia, and Atlantic. These areas are not confined by province boundaries and can spread across multiple provinces. Below are the 3 main wine producing areas and the top wine regions associated with each:
Below, the maps show how Argentina’s provinces, wine producing areas, and wine regions are divided and overlap.
Argentina’s wine regions are labeled by providence names and are determined by where the providence lines and the wine producing area boundaries overlap.
The region does not get a lot of rain, only 8-10 inches a year. It does get a lot of sunlight however but due to the high elevation the area remains moderate between 60-70 degrees Fahrenheit. With the limited rainfall, the air remains dry. This means there are no issues of rot, mildew, or diseases for the grape vines. However, because of limited rainfall, the area does require irrigation.
